College Application Checklist

Stay organized and stress-free with this season-by-season checklist. Use it as your single source of truth from pre-senior summer through decision day.

Spring and Summer Before Senior Year

March - August
  • Finalize your college list to 8-12 schools across Safety, Match, and Reach categories.

  • Create an application tracker for deadlines, fees, and required materials.

  • Draft your main personal statement for the Common App or major state prompts.

  • Ask 2 core-subject teachers and your school counselor for recommendation letters before summer break.

Fall

September - October
  • Create and complete your profiles on the Common App, Coalition App, or school-specific portals.

  • Request official transcripts that include junior year grades and your senior schedule.

  • File FAFSA and CSS Profile as close to opening dates as possible.

  • Take or retake SAT or ACT if needed, then send scores to schools that require them.

Late Fall

November - December
  • Proofread and submit Early Action and Early Decision applications by each school deadline.

  • Write school-specific supplemental essays that clearly show fit and interest.

  • Follow up with recommenders if letters or forms are not yet submitted.

Winter

January - February
  • Submit all Regular Decision applications and confirm each required component.

  • Send mid-year transcripts with first-semester senior grades when requested.

  • Check every college portal to verify transcripts, scores, and recommendations were received.

Spring

March - May
  • Compare admissions results and financial aid packages by net out-of-pocket cost.

  • Submit financial aid appeals if family circumstances have changed.

  • Commit to one college and submit your enrollment deposit by National Decision Day on May 1.

Pro Tip

Keep a shared calendar with your parent or guardian and set milestone alerts two weeks before each deadline. That buffer helps prevent last-minute submission stress.
